보이는 글자, 숨겨진 리듬과 운율

한국국제교류재단(KF)과 주한 불가리아 대사관이 공동 개최하는 전시 <숨겨진 글자는 불가리아에서 창제된 키릴과 우리 고유 문자인 한글의 조형성에 주목한 전시다. 2018년, 불가리아의 리딩 소피아 파운데이션(RSF)은 키릴 알파벳 벤치를 고안해냈고, 벤치에 직접 앉음으로써 무형의 존재인 언어와 알파벳을 몸으로 감각해보는 참여형 전시를 열었다. 마치 주고받는 언어가 서로에게 닿는 듯, 이 전시는 베를린, 파리, 라바트, 부다페스트, 브뤼셀 등 여러 이웃 국가를 거치며 또 다른 언어들과의 교집을 이루었고, 이번에는 본 전시를 통해 처음으로 한글과의 교차지점을 모색하고자 한다.

정방형의 공간 안에 정갈하게 담아내는 한글에 비해 키릴 문자는 분방한 움직임 속에 긴 이야기를 간직하고 있는 듯하다. 9세기경, 선구자였던 키릴로스와 메토디우스 형제가 창안한 글라골문자는 슬라브계 사람들에 의해 널리 전파되었고, 수많은 언어를 아우르며 현재의 키릴 문자로 정착하게 되었다. 조선전기 제4대 세종대왕이 훈민정음이라는 이름으로 창제하여 반포한 우리나라 고유의 문자인 한글은 과학적인 음운학 연구를 토대로 누구나 습득할 수 있도록 만든 문자로, 세계역사에서도 유례를 찾기 어려운 독창적인 문자이다.

《숨겨진 글자》 전시에 자리매김한 여섯개의 키릴 알파벳 벤치에는 키릴의 감각으로 노래했던 불가리아 주요 시인들의 시들을 담으며, 키릴의 여정을 함께해보고자 한다. 또한 작가 김가람과 프로젝트 그룹 아리송의 미디어 작품을 통해 한글과 키릴의 조형을 감각해보기도 하고, 글자 체험존에서 글자를 구성하여 언어를 만지고 섞어보는 등 보다 가까이에서 키릴과 한글을 만나고, 나아가 그 문화와 역사의 같고 다름을 상통하는 교류의 장을 만들고자 한다.

본 전시를 통해 생소한 언어를 마주하는 데에서 오는 막막함의 장벽은 잠시 내려놓고, 키릴문자와 한글 조형을 주고받으며 생기는 언어의 숨겨진 리듬과 운율을 발견하는 기쁨을 전할 수 있기를 바란다.

Visible Letters, Hidden Rhythms, and Beats

The exhibition entitled Hidden Letters, which is co-hosted by the Korea Foundation and the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in the Republic of Korea, highlights the forms of Cyrillic script that were created in Bulgaria, and Hangeul, the unique written text of Korea. The Reading Sofia Foundation of Bulgaria first designed aseries of Cyrillic alphabet benches in 2018 and held an immersive exhibition that allowed the viewers to experience language and the alphabet through their tactile senses, an experience which would otherwise be intangible. Just as language reaches out to its designated recipients, so did the exhibition reach out and intermingle with many foreign cities, including Berlin, Paris, Rabat, Budapest, and Brussels. The project is now seeking to find its intersection with Hangeul for the first time.

Unlike Hangeul, which tidily fits inside a rectangle, there is an unrestrained sense of movement that flows through the Cyrillic script that seems to conceal a long story within its strokes. The Glagolitic script that was first created by the brothers Cyril and Methodius in circa 9th century was spread far and wide by their Bulgarian disciples. It accommodated many different languages as it evolved into the Cyrillic alphabet we know and use today. King Sejong the Great, the fourth monarch of the early Joseon era, created the Hunminjeongeum and proclaimed it the new national text. It is a writing system that was designed to be easily read and written based on the scientific study of phonology. Hangeul is a unique and creative case of text invention that is unprecedented throughout the entire history of humanity.

The six Cyrillic alphabet benches that are showcased in this exhibition also feature the poems of prominent Bulgarian poets that invite the viewers on a journey through the Cyrillic alphabet. Feel the form of Hangeul through media artworks by artist Ga Ram Kim and project group Arisong; touch, mix, and form words at the alphabet experience zone for a more up close and personal exploration of the Cyrillic alphabet and Hangeul; and discover the differences and similarities of the two cultures and histories in the site of cultural exchange that is this exhibition. Set aside the overwhelming feeling of encountering an unfamiliar language, and feel the joy of finding the hidden rhythms and beats that flow throughout the two written texts as their forms interact with each other.
