사물들의 힘

이수그룹의 문화예술 공간 ‘스페이스 이수’는 2025년 1월 13일부터 4월 25일까지 《사물들의 힘》전을 개최한다. 《사물들의 힘》은 일상적 사물들을 통해 미술과 미술이 아닌 것 사이를 오가며 미술에 대해 탐구하는 열 명의 작가의 ‘사물들’을 소개하는 전시이다. 이번 전시에서 만날 수 있는 사물들은 우리 주변에 흔히 있는 익숙한 것들이면서도 작가들의 전복적 상상력으로 또 다른 삶을 살게 된 낯선 것들이다. 이들은 사물과 작품, 삶과 예술, 어느 쪽에도 완전히 속하지 않은 채 그 사이를 오가며 우리를 난처하게 하고, 새로운 언어와 대안적 문법을 고민하게 하고, 우리와 사물의 관계를 끊임없이 재정립하도록 요구한다.

이번 전시의 주인공인 사물들은 다음과 같다. 매끄러운 비닐민속장판(정서영, 〈–어〉), 차곡차곡 쌓아 올린 A4 용지 더미(박이소, 〈A4를 위한 소조〉), 촉촉한 수분을 뿜어내는 대야, 스펀지와 수건 같은 잡동사니들(이주요, 〈가습기〉), 인생 시기마다 갈아입은 유니폼들(서도호, 〈유니폼/들: 자화상/들: 나의 39년 인생〉), 전시장 벽에 밝은 화면을 투사하는 프로젝터(박진아, 〈프로젝터 테스트〉), 이른 저녁부터 어둠을 밝혀 주는 가설 작업등(양유연, 〈From Early Evening〉), 아무것도 담을 수 없는 그물망 항아리(정광호, 〈항아리〉), 따뜻하게 데워주는 전자레인지(베르트랑 라비에, 〈FM 400〉), 지점토로 빚은 통닭 두 마리(김범, 〈12개의 조각적 조리법〉), 길게 펼쳐지는 보드라운 카펫(임민욱, 〈알라딘_인터체인지〉)이 그들이다.

무대에 오른 사물들은 우리에게 친숙한 일상적 사물이자 생경한 미술 작품이다. 이들은 때로는 우리를 당황하게 하는 악동이면서, 함께 일하고 음식과 온기를 나누는 동료이고, 우리의 은밀한 개인사와 함께 겪어온 시대사를 조잘대는 이야기꾼이고, 때로는 우리 몸을 감싸안고 위로하는 친구이자 우리가 알던 미술이 미술이 아니라고 가르치려 드는 선생이다. 이들은 미술 전시장 한복판에서 매끄럽고, 꺼칠하고, 촉촉하고, 부드럽고, 환하고, 은은하고, 구불대고, 따뜻하고, 딱딱하고, 폭신한, 공감각적 풍경화를 만들어 냄으로써 우리와 사물 간의 접촉과 온기를 되살린다. 이 전시에서 말하는 ‘사물들의 힘’이란 작가에게는 ‘미술인 것’과 ‘미술이 아닌 것’ 사이에서 ‘미술이란 무엇인가’를 질문하는 상상력을 불러일으키며, 관람자에게는 주변의 사소하고 평범한 것들을 새롭게 바라보도록 격려하고 또 다른 방식으로 생각하도록 추동하는 힘일 것이다.

《사물들의 힘》은 실재 대신 정보가 우리 삶을 지배하는 오늘날, 우리의 동반자인 사물들을 섬세하게 인식하고, 잊혔던 사물들의 힘을 회복하며, 사물들과 함께 살아가기를 이야기한다. 이번 전시에서 소개하는 열 명의 작가는 “사물을 빤히 바라보며, 사물에게 말을 걸고, 사물의 얼굴을 지각하고, 사물의 생동하는 관상을 알아보고, 사물의 영혼을 돌보며, 사물의 고유한 삶을 사유하고, 사물에 위협당하기도 혹은 매혹당하기도 하고, 사물로 인해 행복하고, 사물의 낯섦에 경탄하는” * 이들이다. 작가들은 우리 주변의 소소한 사물에서 우리가 모르던 숨겨진 비밀을 포착하고, 사물의 신비를 되찾아 주고, 사물과의 풍요로운 대화를 이끌어 냄으로써 사물의 마법을 소환한다. 이번 전시를 통해 작가들의 사물들 사이를 거닐면서 사물이 미술이 되는 순간에 동참하고, 우리 곁을 지켜 온 사물들에 대해서도 되돌아볼 수 있는 시간이 되길 바란다.

The Force of Things

Space ISU, a cultural and art venue operated by the ISU Group, is proud to present “The Force of Things” from January 13 through April 25, 2025. “The Force of Things” offers an intriguing glimpse into the work of ten artists who navigate the boundary between art and non-art through everyday “objects.” While commonplace and familiar in our daily lives, these featured objects are rendered unfamiliar, given entirely new lives through the artists’ subversive imaginations. Not fully belonging to either the realm of objects or that of pure art, these exhibits oscillate between the two, baffling us. They prompt us to consider new languages and alternative grammars, urging us to continuously reestablish our relationship with things.

The protagonists of this exhibition are diverse objects. They include smooth linoleum (Seoyoung Chung, -Awe), a stacked pile of A4 papers (Yiso Bahc, Sculpture for A4), sundries such as a humidifying basin, sponge, and cloth (Jewyo Rhii, Humidifiers), uniforms worn at different life stages (Do Ho Suh, Uni-Form/s: Self-Portrait/s: My 39 Years), a projector casting images on the gallery wall (Jina Park, Projector Test), a light illuminating the darkness (Yooyun Yang, From Early Evening), a net shaped like a pot that can contain nothing (Jung Kwang Ho, The Pot), a food-warming microwave (Bertrand Lavier. FM 400), two paper clay chickens (Kim Beom, 12 Sculptural Recipes—#6, #7), and a long, soft carpet spread out (Minouk Lim, Aladdin_Interchange).

The objects displayed on the stage are both familiar daily items and unfamiliar artworks. They are many things: they are mischievous rascals that sometimes baffle us; companions sharing work, food, and warmth; raconteurs who babble about epochs of history interwoven with our secretive personal stories; comforting friends offering warm embraces; and mentors intent on teaching us that the art we thought we knew is not art at all. By crafting a synesthetic landscape painting filled with smooth, coarse, moist, soft, bright, subdued, winding, warm, hard, and fluffy sensations at the heart of the gallery, the artists revitalize our tactile connection and warmth with these objects. The “force of things” that this exhibition aims to convey is perhaps the force that, for artists, ignites their imaginations to question “what is art?” amidst the boundaries between art and non-art; for viewers, it encourages looking anew at the mundane details surrounding them and inspires a different approach to life.

In today’s world, where information dominates our lives rather than something with tangible presence, “The Force of Things” seeks to delicately recognize things—our lifelong companions, recover their forgotten forces, and continue to live with them. The ten artists featured in the exhibition are those who deeply engage with things: they gaze at them, converse with them, discern their vibrant physiognomies, tend to their souls, and ponder their intrinsic lives, while sometimes being intimidated, enchanted, blissed, and awed by them. * From these mundane, everyday objects, the artists summon the magic hidden within by capturing their secrets, reclaiming their mysteries, and fostering a rich dialogue with them. We invite viewers to walk among the artists’ things and join the moment where objects transform into art, offering an opportunity to reflect deeply on the things that have always been by our side.
